Who Am I – A Veteran’s Story, Turned Into Song
Who Am I is a deeply personal song I co-wrote with RAF veteran Tim Peggs - AI Artist "Alice Tanner", who bravely shared his mental health journey after military retirement. The track explores the emotional battle many service members face when their uniforms come off — the search for purpose, identity, and peace.
What started as a podcast episode turned into a full-scale collaboration through my songwriting project, Off The Record — where real people submit stories to be transformed into songs.
The Backstory
Tim and I met through a podcast conversation originally focused on AI music tools, specifically Suno AI. But what caught me off guard was Tim's vulnerability. He revealed that after retiring from the Royal Air Force, he fell into a dark period of depression and suicidal thoughts. One night, he woke up from a dream and wrote what he could remember. Those words became the seed of his healing.
That moment struck a nerve. I had felt similar things after separating from the U.S. Air Force. It reminded me of programs like Operation Song, and I knew I wanted to do more than listen — I wanted to create something that could speak for both of us.
Songwriting & Production Process
Tim signed up for Off The Record and was selected to have a song written about his experience. We co-wrote Who Am I in just a few hours, and were able to turn it into 2 completely different versions in under a week. Tim and I wrote the lyrics together, but since he is not a musician, I wrote the melody.
After we completed the writing process, Tim suggested 2 versions of the song; one in his preferred style, composed by Suno. For the other version, Tim encouraged me to try Suno AI's "cover song" feature by uploading our worktape — a raw recording of my melody and our lyrics. Suno generated a "demo" (as it's known in the industry) based on that performance. The result surprised me. While I knew it needed refining, it captured enough of the essence to spark inspiration.
From there, I took full control of the production:
- I reworked the arrangement to suit my style (Country).
- I performed every instrument (except drums and a few samples).
- I recorded, mixed, and mastered the track in just 6 days.
I was lucky to have expert feedback from Jed Demlow (Jed Demlow Productions, Nashville), who also mixed my previous single, and Dan Greer (369 Records, Fresno). They both helped me fine-tune the final master.
Why This Song Matters
May is both Military Appreciation Month and Mental Health Awareness Month. It includes Memorial Day, and it also happens to be my birthday month. The timing felt right — and the story too important to wait.
This song is for:
- Veterans struggling to define themselves outside the uniform
- Those silently battling PTSD, depression, or isolation
- Anyone who has ever asked the question: "Who am I?"

Final Thoughts
This is more than a release. It's a message.
To veterans, military families, and everyone struggling with their mental health — this is your reminder: you are not alone. And sometimes, music says what words alone can't.
